Cladding Installation Risk Assessment
This fully completed cladding installation risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers installation of external and internal wall cladding systems including metal cladding, composite panels, rainscreen cladding and associated fixings and sub-frames, and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.
What Does This Cladding Installation Risk Assessment Cover?
This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with cladding installation including;
- Falls from height during cladding installation — operatives falling from scaffolding, MEWPs, edge of completed cladding or temporary working platforms causing fatal and serious injuries
- Falling cladding panels and components — large cladding panels, metal sheets and fixings falling from height striking persons below causing fatal impact injuries
- Manual handling of large cladding panels — handling large, heavy and awkward panels causing musculoskeletal injury and loss of control
- Fire spread risk from combustible cladding — use of combustible insulation or cladding materials presenting a significant fire spread risk on buildings above 18 metres
- Noise and vibration from cladding installation — drilling, fixing and cutting operations causing hearing loss and HAVS
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Work at height plan with scaffolding or MEWP used in preference to ladders and harnesses in MEWPs
- Exclusion zone below all lifting operations with panels lifted using crane or MEWP-mounted equipment
- Temporary fixings securing panels before final fixing with panels never left temporarily unsecured
- Cladding materials checked against building regulations and fire safety guidance before installation
- Combustible cladding not installed on buildings above 18 metres without regulatory approval
- Noise and HAV risk assessments with hearing protection and health surveillance for exposed operatives
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template
This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.
Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?
This cladding installation risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, cladding contractors, principal contractors and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with cladding installation under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and the Building Safety Act 2022. It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.
Note: This example risk assessment is supplied for use as guidance only and should be reviewed and completed by a competent person.
